SQUARE BILLS AND SQUARE BOXES – DUO REALIS CRANK 50SSR KABUKI

Square bills are back in fashion. Step back intime and the square bill design was believed to be invented by Fred Young of Big-O fame in the 1960s. Over the past 50 years or so its had many reinventions, until now where the square looks like it’s here or the long haul.

For Australians they have only ever had a following by a few very switched on anglers, back in the late 1990’s myself along with a few good angling mates used them to great success on Murray Cod and Golden Perch in the upper Murray and Mulwala Region. At the time most local lures manufacturers and anglers were all focussed on getting deeper, which is sort of contradictory as most of the fish in these waterways are located in less than 2 metres.

It’s great to see these erratic little lures making a comeback, and there is a huge range available in all sizes, colours etc from Duo International.

Over the past two years I’ve been using the Godox AD600 Pros, which have proven to be incredibly reliable and perfect for all lighting situations, but they are big and heavy. Though great they are not necessarily ideal for all work, the new AD300 Pro is the perfect studio light for smaller products, insitu work and products that don’t require high power lighting.  Their compact lightweight size is great for travel but also manoeuvrability, being able to quick change to angles quickly, without effort on a C-Stand has been one of the main winners for me. Added to this the color temperature is very good, generally around 5300K, which when I do some WB test shots with the Passport Color Checker I WB on the 18% grey card registers at 5250K, so it’s close to almost perfect. If you are going to shoot a lot of shots in the same lighting setup set the flash to the Color Stable Mode so the kelvin rating will remain the same across many images.
